Securly is the choice for Oregon Charter Academy (ORCA) when it comes to filtering out adult or unsafe content for students online. When students are on their ORCA supplied Chromebooks, Securly is already there to protect them! As a parent/guardian you have a few ways that you can take advantage of Securly yourself. You can use the Securly home app, which you can learn more about here, or the parent portal.
Note: The Securly filter does not function on personal devices. It is designed to work exclusively on school-issued Chromebook devices to monitor and filter student activity. If a student is using a personal device, their activity will not be tracked through Securly.
Logging into the Parent Portal
Logging into the parent portal is simple! This will be a task easily achieved after a week or two of your student putting the assigned school Chromebook to use. ORCA has signed up the email you used during registration to a Securly account. Within the first two weeks of the Chromebook being used you should receive a weekly report of internet usage and sites visited.
Within this email you should see a link to select. The email from Securly will read “Your Child ______’s Activity Report” in the subject line. Either click on “go to my parent portal” or “sign up for Securly, it’s free.” Then, complete the checkboxes to be directed to the portal. You now have access to your parent portal for your student!
What can I do within the Parent Portal?
Within the portal you can view reports of your students' internet usage on the Chromebook. On the left-side of the portal screen you can select Activity. Here you can view reports based off of sites visited, as well as searches in their history. You can filter your search by date range, or even exact site searches.
You can also add sites to the block list! if you would like to add a site that your student does not need for schoolwork to our list at ORCA you can do so under Settings > Manage my Settings. Here you can toggle certain content categories, or select +Allow/Deny at the top right to add a specific site.
Finally there is the Flagged section. This view Shows you all content flagged by Securly based off of ORCA settings, as well as anything you have added for your students filter list in settings.
What is in the “Flagged” section?
- Flagged Sites: If a student accesses a site related to self-harm, it is a cause for concern and we flag it.
- Flagged Searches: If a student’s search terms on Google, Bing, Yahoo, YouTube, or Wiki are indicative of self-harm/violence, we flag the search.
*Please note that Youtube is a requirement for some courses so you may not be able to block Youtube completely.
