Certain Canvas Assignments require you to record video or audio using your device camera. This functionality is built directly into the assignment itself through Canvas' Media Player, and can be done from your browser.
Note: The Tech Team regularly hears reports that Canvas's built-in recording features are unreliable, and will sometimes fail to save, erasing students work. To avoid these issues, we recommend recording assignments using the Camera app on your chromebook for any longer recordings. This will ensure your work is saved if Canvas fails to submit it. Then you can submit your recording using the "File Upload" submission option in Canvas.
If you use the Media Player, it offers accessibility shortcuts that make it easier to navigate and control playback without using a mouse. For instance, you can seek backward or forward by 5 seconds using the Left and Right Arrow keys, or jump 10 seconds by pressing J to rewind and L to fast forward. To adjust volume, use the Up and Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease the audio in 5% increments. Press M to mute or unmute, Spacebar or K to play or pause the video, and F to toggle fullscreen mode.
These shortcuts are especially helpful for users who rely on keyboard navigation or simply want to work more efficiently.
1) Find your assignment
After opening your assignment, you will see that the assignment gives you the option to either Record or Upload Media.
2) Set up your recording
Select the large Panda Icon that says "Record Media" .
NOTE: If this is the first time you have recorded in Canvas, you may have a pop-up from Chrome at the top-left of the screen asking if you want to allow orca.instructure.com to use your microphone and camera to hear and see you. To continue with your recording make sure to click "Allow."
If you accidentally clicked "Block," use this guide to change your settings.
3) Record your voice/video
After selecting the "Record Media" button a box will open titled "Upload Media". Inside of this box you can click to choose which microphone you would like to use, and
to choose which camera to use, or to turn off the camera if you would like to only record your voice.
Click "Start Recording" and a timer will count down from 3 to let you know when you are being recorded. When you are finished recording, click "Finish".
4) Submit your assignment
After finishing your recording, you can give the recording a title or click the "Start Over" button if you don't like what you recorded. When you are finished, click "Save Media". Click the "Submit Assignment" button to submit in the lower right hand corner and you are done!
The Media Player also offers "closed captions". To do this, click on the three stacked dots shown on the top right of your video, and from the dropdown, click on "Upload captions".
From there, choose your caption file format – either .srt or .vtt., and then select the appropriate language from the dropdown. You can click Choose File, then locate and select your caption file. Click Upload to attach the subtitles to your video.
Once uploaded, the "CC" button on the player will allow viewers to toggle subtitles on or off during playback.
This feature makes your videos easier for everyone to watch and understand.
